Adoption

Adoption Policies

Unwanted, abandoned and surrendered birds are accepted into LBH&R and in return, may be adopted to qualified applicants. This does not mean that ALL birds here are adoptable or 'up' for adoption

1. We acccept birds on an 'emergency first' basis. Emergencies are determined at the sole descretion of the president and vice president. We appreciate any known information and advice concerning a prospective intake and/or adoption

2. People wanting to surrender birds maybe placed on a waiting list pending space availability or, foster care availability

3. LBH&R does not breed birds placed with us and we do not place birds into breeding situations under normal circumstances

4. We do not adopt to children

5. We do not adopt birds for the sole purpose of being companions to other birds

6. As a general rule, we will not place a Cockatoo,Macaw or other noisy bird in an apartment or condo

7. Birds must remain in 100% smoke free quarters

8. Birds are to remain in the home and be treated as a family member

9. Adopted birds may NOT be sold, given away or used for any type of monetary purpose

10. All potential adopters will recieve a home visit from a LBH&R representative prior to being approved for any adoption

11. APPROVED applications will be placed on a waiting list if a bird is not currently in our system that would be a good match for the approved adopter

12. Adopters are required to pay an adoption fee and may need to reimburse LBH&R for vet fees for their bird

13. LBH&R will make every attempt to see that a bird can remain in it's current home with counseling and behavior modification IF this is in best interest of the bird

14. Photos are never posted of birds available for adoption

Affordability - Can You Afford An Exotic Bird?

Keeping a pet Parrot can be far more costly than you might imagine. Please take the information shared here into thoughtful consideration when calculating the cost of owning a pet bird...

Many people believe birds to be a "low maintenance" pet. Although the physical chores or cage cleaning and feeding can be dealt with in a short amount of time, the emotional requirements of a pet bird should involve several hours of your time on a daily basis.. The following information is intended to be used to gain a 'general' idea of the costs involved.

Start-Up Expenses

A good sized cage should cost from $250.00 for a Conure sized cage , to $500.00 - $1000.00 for a Macaw cage.

If the bird matures into bird that does not live up to your expectations, will you remain commited to it for the rest of it's life or, will it be discarded or left alone caged? (SERIOUS CONSIDERATION)

Even smaller species are an expense and need the love and devotion of their owners!! This is a 'general' idea of the cost involved:

Monthly Expenses for Smaller Birds
Finches
$10.00
Canaries
$20.00
Budgies
$15.00
